Lagoon Oxygen Test

HACH Probe Test May 21, 2010 at Salmon Wastewater Lagoons

Calvin Leman, Fred Templeton, Jeff Allen (HACH)

Dissolved Oxygen (DO) (ppm)

Total Suspended Solids (TSS) (ppm)

Depth of Probes (feet)

Location of Test

Temperature (Degrees Fahrenheit, Centigrade)

Sun or Cloudy

Notes

DO, TSS, Temperature Probes on 10-foot pipe. 4:31 PM

9.36

(maximum at 17 C is 9.65 ppm)

3.03

0.3

Influent Shore Surface DO increases at surface about 2 ppm each minute when cloudy change to sun.

62 F

17 C

Cloudy then sun, 10 to 15 mph South wind

Increasing DO probably showing algae increasing DO, when sun first replaces cloudy sky.

0.17

4539 (flocculent sludge cause high value)

6.0

Influent Shore Bottom, about 8 feet.

60.3 F

17 C

Sun

Sun not affect DO at bottom. Probe in flocculent sludge.

16.5

27.3

.3

Effluent Catwalk (midway on catwalk) at surface

61.7

17 C

Cloudy, no wind.

Green-Yellow of algae in surface water shown by higher TSS at surface.

.74

4.44

7.5

Effluent Catwalk at bottom

61.8 F

17 C

No algae at bottom. No wind shows bottom DO of 0.74 ppm. Lagoon not turning over.

Cloudy, no wind

.21

4094

Lagoon 1 at catwalk at flow to Lagoon 2 at bottom, within the flocculent sludge.

59.0 F

15 C

Cloudy, no wind

Nearly no DO at bottom.

With a 15 mph wind at 3:50 PM on May 21, 2010, on the down-wind end of the north lagoon at the catwalk, the dissolved oxygen (DO) at the surface 11.97 mg/l was close to the DO at the bottom 8.51 mg/l. At other locations (not down-wind) in the lagoons, the bottom DO was 0.21 to 0.74 mg/l. These data show the lagoon turning over when the wind blows, a phenomenon well known by fisheries biologists.
